  • Hearse Discrimination

I don't know what is changing in the world of car shows, but apparently hearses are not cars, or so I'm told. This is what has happened 2 weeks in a row:

Saturday, March 8th I entered my hearse in a car show at a church that is run by born again bikers. The church goers had no problem with me bring the hearse & the Cremator. But one of the other show participants left. I over heard him state, "There is no way I'm staying here if that is here, fuck this!" He packed up his mustang & left. Now this car show had a non-refundable $25 entrance fee, so he left & lost his $25. I thought nothing of this & figured one less person to compete against, which I guessed worked out since I got second in my class.

Then on Saturday, March 15th, 2 other hearses & I plus an ambulance were at charity car show for Prostate Awareness. (Insert jokes here). To enter this car show it was a non-refundable $5 fee & $25 day of show (if not preregistered). There were over 2000 cars there, the event was 2 blocks wide & 2 miles long & included cruising in the evening & night hours of this 10 event.
Everybody was assigned parking lots to setup & display there rides. Our parking lot was empty except for a few rat rods & a couple of TV/Movie car replicas. The security for the event & even the event coordinators came up & told us that no one was parking here & paying $25-$50 extra to be moved away from the hearses. They said that the other drivers found it offensive that hearses are allowed to participate in car shows since they are not real cars. WTF!!
The event coordinators actually loved us there because we were generating them more money by having people paying not to be in there designated lot.
While cruising that night, we got as many jeers as cheers. I know some people find hearses offensive, that's fine, that's there opinion. But only in the last month have I experienced this were booing & requests to have us removed from events. Being told that it's morbid to own & drive one outside of the funeral industry & I should seek professional help. I even had a lady say; "it's sad that I need to buy something like that to get noticed, if I was just a religious person with good values, people would appreciate me for who I am, not rebelling with what I drive."
I have 2 more car shows this month, one hosted by a grocery store, one by a church, so I guess I'll see what happens at the next 2 shows on March 28th & 29th.

    Anybody have similar confrontations?

I have yet to experience anything negative in driving or showing my hearse, but I guess with time it will come like a slap in the face. I have attended carshows and MORGANA is very well received by the viewing public and other classic car owners and hotrodders as well. We are welcomed as the "added attraction" that draws attention to where they are parked alongside us.
There are idiots in all walks of life, and I have yet to meet one driving a hearse. We are the good guys and the others you experienced are the nuts

you are going to get that reaction. just keep going to the shows if you enjoy them even if someone is an asshole. you have just as much right to be there.

usually the only grief i get is from neighbors. i've taken mine to a couple of car shows, but nothing that bad.

i usually only drive mine when i'm going out to clubs on the weekend. i guess those kind of idiots probably don't stay up that late

Well we had one Dennys ask us not to bring our cars there because they said people were pulling up, seeing the line of hearses, then driving off and not coming into the restaurant. Now, anyone who has seen a hearse club take over a restaurant at 2:00 at night knows this is bullshit, they were people driving by who had no intention of going to said restaurant but took a detour to gawk at the hearses. Fuck em.

As for car shows, generally I don't do shows because they kinda bug me honestly. Too many people taking their shit WAY too seriously, you know, the losers who get bent because they didn't place first and actually take time to contest the results and write letters of protest and shit. Hey guys, it's called JUDGING for a reason! I just can't stand that, people who can find fault with any car around, point out flaws in paint you'd have to be four inches away to notice, screw that noise. Plus I know none of my cars are that nice, partially because I don't have the money to make them that nice and partially because I drive them all the time and don't care. I'd rather have an imperfect car I can drive all the time than something I wipe with a diaper and have to worry is going to get a door ding on it. (sorry, just ranting here)

I've had that happen at McDonalds, a cemetery & a mortuary, never Denny's though.

I quit going to car shows for over a year, but decided to try again, I go for fun & to see what others are doing with their vehicles. I get those serious people who tell me there's a bubble or chip in the paint. I tell them it's a daily driver & not a trailer queen. Most people are cool about it, until this year, I've never had a problem, this year I've been told by car show hosts & other participants that hearses are not allowed since they are morbid & not real cars. I'm still trying to figure that one out, what the hell is a real car?
These cars shows I've attended this year, I was invited to. They saw the club on TV or heard about it from events we've done or friends. They actually came to me versus me finding out about from them. These hosts have been fine & gracious, it's just the other participants that are getting annoying. I drive Grimm every day around the valley, most people tell me they've seen it on the road or at a store, but as soon as I enter it into a show, it all changes.

I would like to do this to alot of them "show car" people who think hearses are not real cars.

I've been asked to a couple events and people thought the hearse was cool. I haven't heard anything negative from my other car clubs but they do ask why I wanted a hearse in the first place.

I always have considered myself or my cars better by the amount of people that get bent at my presence.

A friend of mine and I, in the early 90's, made it a point to go to the Goodguys show in Pleasenton with our heaps and park right in the middle of the car corral, surrounded by 85 thousand dollar midlife crisis mobiles just to get on people's nerves. Lo and behold, Goodguys has now embraced the "satin look." Suckers...

Do your deal bro and take pleasure in the fact that you are not one of the mindless sheep that has to have an "accaptable" car. Every bad reaction to your presence proves that point more and more.

I will not quit going, I am going to continue to go to shows as long as I can & bring more stuff to offend the masses, the Cremator is just the beginning.

Kaos. I'm over in Globe. When my '49 Superior is ready to roll maybe I can join you guys and help rub it in their faces. I've only had her a couple of months and have only driven it a few times and only once through town (I need tires). I got a variety of looks, waves, and big smiles.

Cool. Any help to rock the boat & get hearses excepted as a "real car" is fine with me.
Can't wait to see it done. I almost bought a 1946 Cadillac hearse, but there was issues with the title.

At a show that is coming up (the Lo Down Ho Down), it's a pretty straight up Road Devils show - and they have a trophy called the 'Most likely to win a trophy trophy'. They give it to the guy in the perfectly restored car or the 30k 'hotrod' that comes to shows just to win awards - and that is the only trophy he'll get. Why spend $30k+ on a car to win a $10 trophy?

                          Fuck'm if they can't take a joke.

not to be a snob, but unless someone is one of my hearse friends, generally a cool person, or one of my scene friends, i don't want them looking at my coach, touching it, or even breathing on it.

Not a real car? No, a "Smart" is not a real car.
My coach has been torn down since last Halloween doing renovations. But I still try to take it around the block a few times. 99.9% of the time I get a "thumbs up". The last few car shows I did, people were curious and asked a few dumb questions, but no one was offended.
Kap, I think it is just a phase. Most people have always loved our cars. We have always been a hit where ever we go. I'll be parking BIGEVIL right next to you soon after the paint is done. He who laughs last......
